Dubai is back in its holiday mood.
The Federal Authority of Human Resources has announced July 7 as the Islamic New Year 2024, also called the Hijri New Year. It is an official holiday for the public sector to observe the big day, marking the beginning of the year 1446 in the Islamic Hijri calendar.
The Minister of Human Resources has announced a paid holiday for private sector employees on 7 July, the first day of the month of Muharram. It is expected to be observed this Sunday. This means that schools, government offices, and many businesses will be closed, allowing residents to partake in religious observances and family activities.
The official statement read “The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has announced that Sunday, 7th of July (1st Muharram), will be an official paid public holiday for all private sector establishments in the UAE in celebration of the new Hijri year 1446 AH.”
The Islamic New Year, or any other Muslim Eve, is based on moon sightings and astronomical movements. So, the date varies every year. This comes following Dhull Hijjah — the months when Hajj is performed and Eid Al Adha is observed.
Unlike the Gregorian New Year, which is often celebrated with festivities, the Islamic New Year is typically marked by quieter, more reflective activities, including prayers, mosque attendance, and recitations from the Quran.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has also announced special arrangements to facilitate smooth transportation for those attending religious events and family gatherings across the emirate.
As always, Dubai’s cultural and religious inclusivity is highlighted during such events, with the city providing a welcoming environment for people of all faiths and backgrounds. The public is encouraged to participate in the New Year’s observances respectfully, acknowledging the rich Islamic heritage that shapes much of Dubai’s identity. The Dubai government will also host various cultural and educational programs to mark the Islamic New Year, aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of Islamic traditions and history among the city’s diverse population. These programs will be available both online and in-person, ensuring accessibility for all.
Residents and visitors are advised to stay updated with official announcements for any further details or changes related to the holiday schedule and public services.
